About the Island
Officially known as the Royal Manor and Isle of Portland it is famous for the limestone that has been quarried for centuries and used in the construction of countless buildings including St Paul's Cathedral, London and the UN building, New York.
The island is joined to the mainland by Chesil Beach and a road bridge. Portland is located midway along the UNESCO designated Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
London 2012
Weymouth & Portland, and more specifically Portland Harbour, will be home to the sailing events for the London 2012 Olympics.
